Rites of Passage As a religious community, our Congregation supports individuals and families as they journey through the cycles of life. The Rites of Passage celebrate special milestones in life, the passage of birth, coming of age in our youth, the announcement of union or marriage between partners, and the passage of death. The Congregation also provides a ceremony for recognizing new members, for the ordination of ministers, installation of leaders, and other major events in the lives of individuals may be celebrated by the community. The Rites of Passage are of great moment to be celebrated in joy and worship. Since ancient times, infants, by birth or adoption, have been brought to the temple so that the child's name may be announced to the community, the children's parents (and often 'godparents' as well) may dedicate themselves to the nurture of the child in body, mind and soul, and the young life be blessed by the Congregation who take a like responsibility, representing the family of humanity and life on this planet into which the child is born. Parents meet with the minister, either as one family or in a group, to compile the ceremony which takes place within a worship service of the congregation. At puberty, childhood is waning and youth is beginning. An individual has reached "The Age of Reason," a time to embark upon a process of self-creating adulthood. It is a time of transition and upheaval in which it is important for a person to feel the approval and encouragement of family and religious community alike. At this time, the individual takes responsibility for their own spiritual development, and begins his or her journey in an exploration of the elements inherent in the processes of the religious life. A ceremony marks the successful beginning of this unique journey. Services of Marriage and Union It is important that the life-long commitment of two persons to a loving partnership be blessed by the family and friends of the couple, supported by the wider presence of the Congregation and Clergy. The two persons, in consultation with our minister, compile a ceremony which expresses appropriately and announces to the world the uniqueness of their relationship. The process begins when the minister agrees to officiate at the ceremony for the couple followed by several meetings for planning and dialog. The final passage and the grief and remembrance of loved ones and friends is honored in the Congregation as a time to pause and to celebrate the qualities and meanings in that unique life. A Funeral Service takes place within a few days and with the presence of a coffin. Or a Memorial Service may be held instead, usually at a later time. Often a Committal Service is held as well, graveside. Personal information and wishes may be registered with the minister to ensure that plans are appropriate. Congregational life is a great opportunity and responsibility. In signing the membership book, a person announces their participation in the democratic processes of this Congregation and a devotion to furthering the effectiveness of our ministry in society and with each other. Through this local congregation, a person may connect with and participate in the larger Unitarian Universalist Association. For more information about and participation in any of these or other Rites of Passage, please call our minister, Rev. Ralph B. Galen, (508) 475-4454 at the congregation, to arrange an appointment. |
